CANDY DRESS IN WAITING
Here's the other vintage dress I bought during my Berlin trip. It looks quitehome made, 80's goes 50's I'd guess, and has a very nice model with a big skirt with hidden pockets, a round collar and a beautiful neckline in the back.
The only thing is the colours are a bit too much in my opinion. A little bit too much candy, kind of like tutti frutti bubble gum, which I can't stand.
The colours might still work if I'd actually go for the Snowhite look and colour my hair black but as I won't I thought I'd colour the dress instead.
The stripes will still show trhough but that does not bother me (in fact it will be nice) I just want it in a shade less tootache, less eighties.
I was thinking red or purple perhaps. The zipper is pink but I can change that, maybe even to a metal ine for a more old-vintage feel. But it would be nice to get some other points of view on the colouring too so what do you think?

It is really candy candy stuff. Reminds me of candy floss & festa time here on my island in the sun. You could wear it with a grey belt, a grey pair of shoes, grey hat, grey bag - it would sober the girly look somewhat perhaps. What's wrong with the zipper? I rather like that little dangly thing at the top!
I think the dress is cute! A little too pink for me, but still sweet. Daisy Dayz Home
I think its beautiful the way it is and I really think you could pull it off.
very interesting - I have a similar problem with a dress that is partially barbiepink (skirt) and partially white with green dots (top) - I've only wore it once because colours are too 'candy' for me as was thinking of colouring it but still haven't done it because I'm not sure of the effect on the white part of the dress - if you do colour, show the result!!!
I really like it as it is! I think it would look great on you. As FairyFiligree said I think it would be all about the accessories to tone it down.
Ooo,I love it as is!!
Oh no, I've been looking for a candy stripe dress like that, and you're going to colour it! Well, I understand you, because the colours are really bright, but the dress is cute anyway.
Yes it's nice (but looks better on photo than in real life i think...) but I won't wear it as it is so I will have to colour it.
Oh, and I like the zipper! But I meant I can change that if the dress becomes a colour thta won't go well with pink :)
I understand your concern, but I really like the colours the way they are... too bad I didn't find a similar cotton candy dress, I've been in Berlin the whole week, too ;)
i really like the colours although they are definitely rather saccharine. if it was dyed a less bright shade maybe a contrasting colour on the collar would work?
love from amelia of la ville inconnue and the snail and the pigeon
purple, not red.
What a beautiful dress!

In my opinion the idea of recoloring the dress is not a really good one. I have colored some dresses and jeans etc. but the color you usually get is quite not the same you want, because every fabric reacts differently. This one is cotton right? But if you still decide to color, make it a purple one and let us know what happened!

Nolita . I've dyed lot'f of things so Im quite used to it. This is pure cotton so it will take on colour well. But too bad one can't colour fabric white, that would be great, I'd change the pink to white :D I think I will go for purple and I will of course blog about it when it'd done!
I love 80s does 50s. personally, I like these kinds of colors, but I'm super curious to see how it comes out. also, I just realized I'm in your blogroll, thank you so much
What about taking colour off instead? I was immediatelly thinking about bleaching it. Not completely, but enough to take the edge of the tutti frutti bubble gum. I recently saw in a shop a package of Colour Remover/Bleacher and was thinking what amazing stuff would a creative person do with that =)
Oh no leave it! Pastel colours like that make pale skinned platinum blondes like you glow.
Maybe just accessorise with some grey elements to tone it down.
well you seem dead-est on coloring that dress..!.still, what I would do is pair up that dress with a dove-gray gardigan and tights...you could even button the cardigan all the way down with only the collar sticking out on top, or wear another roomy light gray (or pale baby blue?) sweater, cardi or top layer (pinafore? apron? *hahaha!) so all the colors don't overwhelm you...I think there may be ways to layer that dress and take some of the "candy" out...
* ; )
just some thoughts...
put it on, take a pic and we'll all have a vote-personally I love it when you go 'ice cream candy gal' because with your colouring and hair you can totally pull it off and then some. I liked the grey accessories idea, that would subdue the shades somewhat......
Älskar modellen och tror den skulle vara fin i många färger. Lila blir nog bra men annars hade den varit fin i mörkt grön! Lycka till!
Hey, I think Rhia might have a good idea there, what about bleaching? Or would it still be the wrong colours?
I think you just can't have too much candy. Just leave the colours like that. You will look beautiful for sure!
I'd leave it as it is and combine it with a black (fake) leather jacket and black hairbow or so...so that it gets a strong look ! and yep ...the heart on my wrist is gone, I like my new ladybug much better ! kisses from berlin, anne
Hey,
Just found your blog link on Big Beautiful Barbara Brown's site... you have such a great blog and style :)
I'd dye it too, in a lovely blackberry shade, or how about navy blue? The pink may make the navy more purpley anyway :)
Sounds like you have tonnes of practice anyway, but the few times I've dyed stuff I've steered clear of washing machine dyes and coloured by hand in a big pan. For me it has given better results, then I've coloured any nylon stitching in with a permanent marker in a shade matching the fabric :D
Lovely to meet you (Sort of)
