The internet tells me Zach Condon, the man behind the band, was born as late as 1986 (and thus was only twenty when then first album Gulag Orkestar came out)! I get stressed by facts like that for some reason. It's strange -and stupid- but sometimes it feels like the whole world out there is just getting younger while I'm getting old (although I actually keep on forgetting my age only to remember I am not even thirty yet). You know, people born in the nineties are already grown up. But why not, although terrified by how fast time goes I, in soem ways, like the thought of getting older. It makes me feel calm for some reason.

IT SEEMS THE WHOLE WORLD IS YOUNGER THAN I
I have a whole lot of things to blog about but that would require a) time b) my camera and c) another environment than the one I am in now. I have none of those available right now as I have been stuck here in the harbour, pretty much for days, all of the time. I'll spend this Sunday with Beirut in between the boats so I'll share a little bit of that then:
I love Balkan influences in music (and Balkan music itself of course) and songs in minor key sung by sad men. Beirut is pretty much all that and a whole lot more too, and also a essential part of my Soft Sunday List.

Beirut är så bra! De finns med även på min söndagslista: http://open.spotify.com/user/tinwealeni/playlist/6L2xuz0060eGofb0Z27jFe :)
For some reason my default age is 24 and I get quite a fright when I have to remind myself to add on a few years to that age.
I have the exact same feeling, I have a bunch of friends who are younger than me and when I talk about the TV shows that I liked as a kid they never heard about it, it's quite shoking!;)
And as a teenager I was sure that by the time I got that old (I'm almost 28) I would be all grown up and mature!! But I'm not!;)
I always feel the opposite, pretty much all of my friends are between six months to six (or more) years older than me. It's pretty weird, because I sometimes feel like I'm emotionally way less mature (duh), but I think I like surrounding myself with people who can teach me things.
Fröken Elina : skall ta och lyssna :)
Aisling : for some reason my default age has become 32 or so. I keep on forgetting I'm only 28. For a little while still.
Lexy Mademyday : haha I know what you mean. But sometime ut's chocking for me to notice I AM all grown up now in so many ways I suppose this is it.
Rosie Unknown : for me it works just the other way, many of those I spend time with are older than I which makes me feel way over thirty... and then again many of the guys at work are in their early twenties and since I'm the boss and have been working here for ages which makes me much more older than the five-six years I am :D
my thoughts exactly! there's a whole new generation out there... yesterday I was out on a date with an 18-year-old guy :) there's 12 years between us but I've never really thought about it whenever I've been with him... other than that, getting older is nice actually.
Anna : You go girl!
great music choice!
The most horrible for me is a fact, that when I was 23 I was drinking sometimes with some people 18/19 years old. When I was 25, they were a little over 20 and we still were spending time together. Now they are about 25 and still having a lot of fun, and I'm feeling so old and dull. It's unfair.
P.S. I'm younger than you by a month :)
My default age was 30 almost a year before I turned 30, so when I turned 30 I was more surprised I wasn't older. Now I don't know how old I am. I also keep forgetting how old my friends are. Age somehow loses its meaning around 30, it really doesn't make any difference if you're 30 or 34 or 37. It only matters when you're 15, 22 and 27. And of course, if most of you're friends are younger it might matter, but I have quite few close friends that are more than one or two years younger than me.
I love Beirut, the music is so beautiful. I hope they would come to Finland some time. I myself feel young, and that's what I am, but time goes by so fast nowadays that I'm afraid of waking up one day and noticing I'm 50 years old.. :-D
It really freaked us out when my wife's little sister (15 years younger) didn't really know who Nirvana was.
I agree with you though, I enjoy the thought of getting old (I already act as if old in many ways - shave with safety razor and brush and soap, rather use candles than electric lights, ride bicycles everywhere, rather stay home and cook than go out most of the time). I simply look forward to life, so I'm excited to see what the rest of it will be like. So far, it only keeps getting better. And I think my wife will be a beautiful old lady. I love the thought of growing old with her.
Angelia : yes it is :)
Turbokitty : But also you do other things than they don't you? I mean quality things, right?
Ina : yup, exactly1
Anniina : I would love it if they came here!
Dave : If this was facebook I'd press LIKE :)
Age is such a funny thing-I don't think most people "feel" their age at all. It is frightening to think that people born the year I graduated from high school are going to be 20, but honestly, at 37 I am the happiest I've ever been. There sure is a calmness and a happiness that comes with aging.
older is also getting wiser, maybe that gives some comfort - In my job getting older also means getting more credebility so that helps and moreover my husband is ten years older then me, so I will always be the young one ;)
I love Beirut! And even though Im only 22, those age facts stress me out as well. Like when I found out that Keats died really young, and Truman Capote's first book was published when he was like 18 or something crazy like that. But then Im reminded that those are exceptions to the rule, and you can achieve truly remarkable things, no matter what your chronological age is.s
Age is relative. Personality matters. At age 42 I have never felt more ageless and I would not trade these years of experience and walked miles for anything. Personally I don´t think age has anything to do with the years you count from the day you are born. It comes from something much deeper. Thanks for this blog, btw, it is fun to read.
I understand what you're saying, the younger generations are just living/growing up too fast. For being 24, I feel like I have an old soul though many think I look young & inexperienced. I hate comparing people but lately the kids graduating from high school look very old & totally jaded as if they've wasted their youth on something but I truly can't seem to pin point on what, oh well. I like to take things slow & embrace the possibilities that come with age. -iliana :)
