ALL SUITED UP

...and then dressed down to nothing but ripped muscles and golden hot pants but that is another story.

(Black-and-whie picture by @bettieblackheart)

Last weekend we got to do our boy-band act again! It is such fun to do because it is very much tongue-in-cheek, but also because it is so much different from what we/ I normally do and look like. And hanging around in a suit boots and tie afterwards at the Finnish Burlesque Gala is rather relaxing as 1) everyone else will be in their most shiniest dressed up to the teeth while I can just sit back on a chair and relax and 2) ah, suits, trousers, pockets; no need for a purse, my hands are free.

However, I  think I worry about and check my make-up more than normally ...
I find it a bit hard to do a "proper" masculine make up that does not make me look tired or just "dusty", especially as it has to be strong enough to work for on-stage too. I can make myself all pin-up and showgirl in no time but to get a good looking guy out of me is harder. (Since I'd still want Mr.Freelancer to be kind of handsome you know.) Especially with the hair, to not look all Leo Johnson (90's. Curly Ponytail. Twin Peaks) or like I have a mullet. But this time with my hipsterish-boy-meets-a-young-Justin-Timberlake-meets-Boy-George-curls it worked out a bit better.

It is funny how different clothing and style affects one behaviour. Well, of course, when in drag - and especially for this number, and on occasions like these- when one has a distinct exaggerated character the way one presents onself is often part of the role. But I remember from when working in the harbour how my body language and behaviour differed from other occasions.  It was not a thing that happened by choice, but something that came naturally without thinking, due to the environment and the gear, and how I was used to act in it. Once my ex-boyfriend, who was a seaman, came over to our headquarters from his ship to hang out with us during the break. Afterwards he said he was so surprised to see me there in my workwear eating lunch with feet on the table, moving around differently and with a different posture than usual (we lived together at the time and he was used to seeing me slouch around at home, athough, in a different way). That change in how I acted never happened on purpose and was most likely something that had developed over time there - I did work in the harbour for more than a decade and we all worked long shifts, and thus spent a lot of our time there. Still, I also though working there brought out a lot of very feminine sides of me; in many situations you could really see stereotypical differences between me and "the rest of the guys" as in which way we chose to see things or solve issues. Interesting form a social point of view. Also heavier shoes (and pants with some extra room in the crotch) just makes you walk in a different way.

Well back to the boy band parody.

Here's a little action from on stage where we are doing very manly push ups. Aha-aha.

VINTAGE ETSY GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY

My friend Ina who owns and runs Years Since Yesterday and I decided it was time for a little give away to her vintage etsy shop again!

Ina collects vintage items that can be labelled "americana" from her stays in Texas to put up for sale on YSY, as well with some Finnish vintage pieces scouted at home. For the moment she has more items for men than women, which is nice as it's most often the other way around. So something for the guys this time too! Or, you-know-what season is approaching so why not get your Xmas gift  for some special guy in time?

(Btw, read a short article on the fact that not the shopping but "search" for Christmas gifts online starts now already, searching for items for men and children. "Christmas gifts for women" were most frequently searched the last two days before Christmas. Hehe. Not surprised.)

Well anyway, the winner of give away will receive one gift card of 25 euros to use in the shop.
To enter, like the Years Since Yesterday Facebook page (if you don't already do) and leave me a comment on this post letting me know what your favorite item in the YSY-store is.

The give away will run for one week; so participate before Wednesday October 30!
I will draw the winner randomly so one comment per person as usual, unless you share this post, which will give you one more entry per share.
AND, you know, make sure I can reach you trough your comment! Seriously.
I will announcec the winner shortly thereafter, which will give him/her time to shop and receive the item(s) before Ina closes her store on December 10 for her few months trip to the US again.

BECAUSE BOYS LOVE COLOURS TOO

Some time ago I was asked to try out and style socks from We Love Colors. We Love Colors offers a lot products for women, men and children in more than 50 colour choices on everything. They have mostly leg wear, but also products like dance wear and gloves. The colours go from earth near shades to neon bright.

I used to wear a lot of colored leg wear before and mix and match, even though I nowadays am more moderate with my tights and stockings; choosing mostly brown, grey and black or darker colours like burgundy and aubergine. For burlesque shows however I love to wear coloured fishnets for example, but more on that another time.

What I really enjoyed among the We Love Colors products was the fact that they offered socks for men in all the same colours as they offer women. I have often been searching for plain colored socks for Eddi but with the exception of some blue and red ones it's hard to find other than dark socks for men! So Eddi got to try out a coulpe of sports socks:

(Eddi says he is not giving the finger to the world on purpose.)

I think socks are a great way to spice up any outfit for a guy, add a little fun and colour to it by matching a shirt, accessory or a fine pair of shoes with the socks, or perhaps by letting the socks be a small contrasting detail to the rest. This applies to women's outfits too of course, but writing this I mostly had mens' clothing in mind, as it tends to be darker and less colorful compared to what women wear. (Ok, I know some trends lately have been very colorful for boys and men alike, but I'm thinking classic styles here, not techno hipsters or the early nineties.)

The sport socks are a quite good lenght that goes properly over the ancle and up on the calf. The colors are very bright! Colours differ from one computer screen to another, so check the name properly on the colour you want to order, neon really is neon bright :)
