SUVI VINTAGE WEEKEND POSTER

This year's poster I made for the Suvi-Vintage event.
The theme is the 1930's and holidays so I put in some giant 30's pants.

GALA DRESS & A TWENTIES TWIST

I was invited to an entertainment gala last night and as my usual self when over employed  I created a little more work for myself still by making a new dress for the occasion. The theme was "a 1920's twist" so I went for a timeless sparkly dress and put on some twenties' inspired accessories and my vintage art deco jewellery. In my mind the dress would have been ready in half an hour but as I changed my mind a few times along the way it did take me a couple of nights to Finnish. Sometimes with Dag in my lap too ;)

The dress got a tiny little fan tail.

I got the fringe bag in Stockholm about a decade ago; I remember eyeing it in the store every time I was over (which was rather often at that time) but finding it too expensive at the time, until I finally gave in and got it.

I borrowed the turban from an act of ours. On stage we wear this with a big rhinestone-feather clip. It's originally from etsy.

And some dark make up on (was painting on e y e b r o w s when I remembered that "oh! damn, cool down, I am not going on stage tonight". Heh. When performing so often one almost forgets how to put party make up on "normally"...) and I was good to go.

FANTASIA

Print of the day: Fantasia by Erté.

Erté is one of my favorite illustrators, you may remember; I've written about him before.

LA BELLE DÉCADENCE

For some time last year I had this idea of a stage costume, that would also include big flat fans.

An idea that we early in autumn developed into a project:

That some months later, this February, turned into this:

By Atelieri O.Haapala. (You saw the other portrait just recently too)

And this, on stage:
(the last picture might be considered nsfw. But you can always call it art...)

(I just love our faces here!)

Sepia toned photos by Emiliano Melandri,  coloured shots by Jari B.Miettinen.

You'll see this (and another act) in Milan in a couple of weeks!
That will most likely be my last show before my burlesque-mommy leave starts.

ART DECO AND A WHOLE LOT OF POSING

On Thursday night I got to use my art deco jewelry, that you could read about some posts ago!
(Well, I actually did get the brooch especially for this occasion.)

And now some serious posing will follow:

My dress has belonged to a relative of mine; it is from the 1930's, as are the rings with pearl and turquoise. I got one of them from my grandmother for my confirmation many years ago. The other one is from the vintage store Hoochie Mamam Jane.

Eddi and I (plus our huge name tags) at the family gathering at the House of Knights. It's interesting every time as you always meet someone you might not even be that far related to but of whose existence you didn't even know... (Btw not that it is of any relevance today; but we; in my family, are not noble. But some in the family have been. Which in some aspects probably made life more pleasant in the pre-1900's.)

The fellas posing, much to their enjoy (as you can see).

The hall of nobility and it's Finnish coats of arms.

I had made my youngest sister's hair for the evening. (Her do was in more interesting than mine, as I nowadays with shorter hair mostly just curl it more or less...)

Me and my sisters posing in front of out great-great grandfather; whose 150th birthday celebration the evening all was about.

Now it's just to wait for the next reunion and the chance to get seriously dressed up again! Or, until something else fancy comes along...

ART DECO FÖR HELA SLANTEN

(Which in case you wonder would be Swedish and mean something like Art Deco for all the money; as in all the way. Koko rahalla. Which then again was Finnish for the same thing.)

I got myself a art deco brooch. It is from the same Chez vintage series you have seen somewhat a lot of before here; from my friend's vintage store Hoochie Mama Jane. I actually have a pair of matching earrings already.

Which I will wear next week for this Very Fancy family celebration thing in the House of Nobility, together with my early 1930's velvet evening gown. Ah, a chance to actually get to dress up... Love those.

(Let's just hope I'll get other chances to use the jewelry too... over all I have not been much of a jewelry wearer the past years, but that is slowly changing. I want bigger hair and more rings on my fingers, gold and glitter and the whole bling thing! Sort of.)

FINTAGE

Quite recently I did a poster for Fintage; a Finnish vintage forum, community and blog. I tried to be somewhat active at the forum when it started a year ago but couldn't keep up as I just don't have the time to blog, tweet, update a facebook page and maybe even read some blogs every now and then... (and, you know, a have life off line too).

The theme of the poster was to be people on a certain bridge in one Finnish city. Can you tell which one? I'm not from around there so I had to rely on photos and google street view for some help :)You can click on the image for a larger view.

(As usual I always end up with two versions, the client's one and a more plain one I prefer, you can view the other one here.)

KEEPING A GIFT FOR MYSELF

I got myself a new art deco inspired hat. Or head piece, however you like to see it. Originally I did buy it as a gift for someone else, but as soon as I left the shop I got doubtful and at home I thought - what the hell! I'll keep it!

I mean, it even has a tassel for heaven's sake!

The hat is made by Linda in Ansa and the bangs are fake, re-coloured from platinum and thus useable for me again. I had to give the ends of my hair some fresh tint too as they are so bleached they started loosing colour and going matte. We only had to colour half of the hair however, as it is growing out in the "right" colour.
(My hairdresser is an old friend of mine, Josefin, and she works at Prof downtown, in case someone's interested or want to pay her a visit or so.)
The sateen outfit is Vivien of Holloway.

PICTURES FROM HOOCHIE MAMA JANE

I took some pics over to HMJ when I was Christmas shopping there last week. The tiny store is filled with pretty jewellery (check out the Christmas calendar on Facebook!), and as you know I bought both myself and others some.

I'm still dreaming about one of the deco earrings, only I am not sure which pair to choose - I love the big and blingy ones, but I am no longer used to wear heavy earrings and I feel they make my ears "hang". But like they saying goes in Swedish "vill man vara fin, får man lida pin". The are selling out fast though so I'd better make up my mind!

(If you are in the neighborhood I also recommend a trip to Ansa!)

GIVE AWAY TIME : ART DECO EARRINGS FROM HOCHIE MAMA JANE!

I think you all remember the art deco earrings Hoochie Mama Jane sold at Helsinki Vintage - dead stock jewellery from a Chez manufacturer that closed down in the late 20's eraly 30's, the same ones that made the Mucha designed pieces?

Well, now Hoochie Mama Jane (selected as Helsinki's best vintage store 2010 by City-magazine btw, yey!) is giving away one pair of those earring to one of you!

The pair you can win is about 10 centimeres long, with a drop of soft pink glass and turquoise, purple and clear rhinestones. Lot's of small prety deatils, one of a kind for sure!
The earring are sold for 75-200 euros, this pair is valued at roughly 100€.

The give away is open to all my readers, followers and random stop-by's alike. To enter, as usual, all you have to do is leave me a comment on this post! However, Hoochie Mama Jane is a small one woman business so I'd appreciate it if you'd stop by the store on Vaasankatu to check out all the lovely things there. If you're not around town, take some time to visit the website and the Facebook group - there is no online store and the text is in Finnish; but if you see something you really want in the pics you can always send her an inquiry by email.

And as usual you may only leave me one comment, but if you re-post or tweet about the give away you may leave me another comment here telling me you've done so, linking to your mention. Make sure your blogger profile is open, and if you are not linked to any site, leave me a working email.

A PIECE OF MUCHA'S LEGACY

My friend Irja, who runs the vintage shop Hoochie Mama Jane came across Art Nouveau jewellery said to truly be from the beginning of the 20th century and designed by Mucha himself! Mucha! I love Mucha! And Irja loves Mucha - she even has a Mucha tattoo. As she also tends to go for more is more she therefore had to get these, even not convinced of their origin.

After some googling and some emails it turned out these necklaces were dead stock from a Czech factory that closed around 1924-25 and the design on the jewellery where indeed originally by Mucha's hand! Quite the find.

And oh what amount of vintage bling bling! Classy bling. And pretty gems.

The necklaces will not be for sale at Irja's store though, she'll keep them to herself.
